Our family's favorite dish is Fish Vindaye! It is a classic mauritian dish and very popular across the island. Mauritians love eating their fish vindaye with a nice crusty french baguette and you can get them from many food vendors anywhere you go on the island. At home, when I make this dish, it is gone in literally a day or two. I use frozen tilapia fish fillets because not only is it tasty but it's also less expensive than other type of fish. I remember my mom used to make it with tuna fish which was also very good. So it's really your choice as to which type of fish you prefer to use.
Here's the recipe for you to try.
FISH VINDAYE
4lbs of tilapia fish fillet (frozen or fresh)
Oil for frying
1 tsp safran
1 tsp ground mustard
Onions quartered
4 - 5 green chilis
Salt
Vinegar
Fry the fish fillets in vegetable oil
Mix the safran and ground mustard with a little bit of water to make a paste
Heat oil in a pan, add the mixed safran and mustard, onions and chilis
Stir fry for a minute or two
Add salt
Add the fish fillets - I break them up into big pieces
Turn off the heat
Add a few tablespoons of vinegar
Mix well and sprinkle with more ground mustard
